Abstract : The Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) was established in 1982 and was further upgraded to the Sixth Schedule in 1984 to cater to the socio-economic and political aspirations of the tribal communities against the odds created by the emergent State context. Based on our fieldwork, we found that local self-governance under the Sixth Schedule has taken an integration approach under the statutory regulation and legislation with visible signs of state-controlled devolution of power. Against this backdrop, our attempt in this ‘policy dialogue’ is to revisit the historical background of TTAADC and to critically engage with challenges confronting local self-governance under the Sixth Schedule in Tribal areas of Tripura. In doing so, we attempt to re-foreground the values of the Sixth Schedule and indicate possibilities for reviving the political agency of TTAADC suited to the emerging context.
